Mr. and Mrs. Ehrhardt

Helmut Ehrhardt's Steel Home, is just up river from Punta Gorda, Florida. The Ehrhardt's were at their summer home in Pennsylvania when Hurricane Charlie hit, but his son's family lives near their steel home.

“When the hurricane was coming in I called him and said to get over to our steel home. His family and his neighbors family came and stayed in the house and it's a good thing they did because their house and their neighbors house were completely and totally destroyed. This home saved their life.”

Candy Dessert had a Steel Home rated for 110 mph winds, but a local builder had added on a garage/storage area, not by Freedom Steel Homes. The garage was completely destroyed but the home only had minor damage.

“The eye of Hurricane Ivan hit at 2am. We heard the garage door cave in at 3am and within half an hour the whole garage went. It sucked all the insulation out of our attic, but the house did fine.”

“We had wind at 155 miles per hour during the tornado, and it was circular wind. It snapped telephone poles in front and broke the 2” posts of my swimming pool fence out back. Most of the insulation was sucked out of our attic, but we didn't even have a sheet rock crack.”

“Jerry McFarland of Minden, Louisiana after a tornado hit their home on April 23, 2000. “We love the house and we enjoyed building it!”

Mr. and Mrs. Long

The cellulose insulation in their attic was on fire for 2 days.

The insulation was too close to the flue of their wood burning stove and caught fire. They smelled it burning for two days but thought it was the stove drawing poorly. The fire was contained between two ceiling joists so it did not spread, but it did burn a hole in the ceiling.

“The fire department said that if it had been a wood frame house, the whole attic would have caught fire and the house could have burned down around us. Were glad we live in a steel home.”

Linda Long / Phenix City, Alabama
